Description:

AstroNUTZ! is a casual puzzle game where player needs to connect tiles into paths by rotating them in order to collect all pickups on the level.

This game was developed in five days during Summer Game Dev and won the first place.

My Contribution:

This was my first game jam project. Creating levels for this concept was a bit difficult at first; it was very easy to miss a path that I wouldn't want players to use.

Level and Puzzle Design
  • Designed 8 levels in total during Summer Game Dev

  • Designed additional 4 levels after Summer Game Dev

  • Playtested and polished levels

The main challenge for level design was keeping track of all the possible paths player can make. At first it was difficult to visualise them and think everything through; however I have learnt a few combinations that could get me the desired results and also trained myself to see the possible combintaions. Because of this the way my levels looked has changed too: tiles on the newer levels combine into various patterns, which also makes finding the right path more challenging.

Level prototypes in Maya, before we had a working level editor

Concepting

I suggested the initial concept - the idea was similar except it was in 2D. We have decided to move to 3d later on to give the game a unique look and add novelty into gameplay. I also suggested that player should have limited turns; however this idea was scrapped out as that would be an overscoping on programming department.

I also brainstormed basic mechanics and new mechanics together with my team. For example, I suggested non-rotatable tiles or tiles that affect other tiles upon rotation.
