Description:

Arboreal is a top down, open-world farming & adventuring game where you save ancient colossi from a spreading corruption.

This is a year long study project where I took on the role of a System Designer.

My Contribution:

Arboreal is my first big project with the team consisting of more than 30 people. I have been interested in System Design for quite a while and decided to take on this role for the project in order to gain more experience in this area. My main responsibilities included concepting, economy design, combat and playtesting organisation.

System Design

As a System Designer I was responsible for:

  • Creating High-Level concepts of systems

  • Detailing systems, especially economy and resource flow

  • Creating quick prototypes of systems 

  • Holding playtesting sessions 

  • Tweaking system variables and ensuring the gameplay balance

  • Communicating with other feature teams and disciplines to ensure the coherency of all game elements

Prototyping

During the pre-production stage I created prototypes to explore and showcase various mechanics ideas. After settling on the concept, I created prototypes for economy and farming system to balance out resource flow and price values for items.
